Peter Weeks

Peter Weeks is a mechanical engineer and is an Ex member of the English Chartered Engineering Institute, has an HNC in Business Studies (with distinction) from Exeter College, England and has completed an AEP from UCLA (USA).

Peter consults, mentors and coaches various entrepreneurs, individuals and companies with regard to strategy, process, financial management, growth, business in Africa and raising capital. He has recently been involved in building a company that provides contract risk management systems and solutions. One of the company’s solutions was implemented at a large financial services group. Peter has specialist skills in Banking, Financial systems, Payment systems, Risk management and Information Technology. Peter sits on many boards where he has investment interests and also performs the non-executive role for companies.

Peter finished his employment as a General Manager with Nedcor Bank on the 30th November 2004, having elected to take early retirement at age 50 years after over 10 years with the bank.

During his time at Nedcor Peter was responsible for Application Development, Programme management, Innovation management and was involved in most of the banks mergers and acquisitions.

Peter was also Chairman of BastionZA (Pty) Ltd, a 75% owned Nedcor Bank subsidiary, which managed the Information Technology (Packages Flexi and Globus) needs of the Nedcor Group’s small banks. BastionZA supported the technology of Cape of Good Hope Bank (CoGHB), Commercial Bank of Namibia (CBoN), Nedbank Swaziland, Nedbank Lesotho, Merchant Bank of Central Africa (MBCA-Zimbabwe), Nedbank Asia (Hong Kong & Singapore), and FINCOM (Malawi). Peter also consulted to the State bank of Mauritius on their technology (flexcube) requirements. Peter was involved with Nedbank London and supported the Managing Director of Gerrard’s Bank, London with Technology strategy. Peter consulted to CoGHB working with the Managing Director to guide them on their Information Technology and Process strategy. Peter completed a strategic technology and operations review for Old Mutual Bank and then helped implement the recommendations.

In addition to the Chairmanship of BastionZA, Peter was a main board director of Datacraft Americas (a Nedcor/Dimension Data/BB&D subsidiary) for four years. Datacraft Americas had telecommunications and support companies in Brazil and Mexico. Peter has served on the board of Miraculum (B2B), Nihilent (Indian Development Company) and represented Nedcor at Aturis Ltd (Commercial Insurance, UK). Peter held the position of Chairman of the technology committee of Bankserv (South African Joint Banks Operating Company) board between 1998 and 2001, and successfully steered Bankserv through their Y2K project. Due to the non-executive nature of these directorship appointments, Peter has continued to remain fully up to date with Corporate Governance issues.

Based on Peter’s extensive Credit Card knowledge and involvement in the initial Smart Card projects in South Africa, VISA International requested his involvement as an "International Smart Card advisor" (One of 6 worldwide) to help plan their smart card strategy.

Prior to joining Nedcor, Peter was General Manager of Information Technology and Credit for the then largest retail group in Southern Africa. During his time with this group Peter was responsible to the Board of the OK/Hyperama Group for all Technology and Credit Administration strategy.

Peter also spent nearly three years with First National Bank (Barclays) as Head of Development - Electronic Banking Systems, which included the Plastics infrastructure. During this period he was responsible for all delivery channel development including ATM’s, Financial Terminals, Internet, Merchant terminals, Cash Management and Telephone Banking. His tenure at this bank also included heading up the original CAMS II (Credit and Debit) development team in conjunction with Hogan Systems (CSC) in Dallas, USA.

Before coming to South Africa Peter was involved in Manufacturing Systems, Hospital Administration Systems and Production Engineering and Design support.
